How Dark the World Becomes

Narrator Paul Heitsch wastes no breath jumping into the character of Sasha…

…a gangster of growing renown. Throughout the story Heitsch continues his energetic pace. On a planet where humans rate at the bottom of the social order, Sasha has a chip on his shoulder, which causes those around him to keep their distance. Heitsch deftly captures all his resentment. When he does let down his guard to one of his companions, Heitsch creates a tone of intimacy and shows his vulnerability. Similarly, when Sasha saves two alien children, Heitsch contrasts his sensitive manner of addressing the kids with his fortitude in addressing the threat to them, both of which make him more likable.
